Historic Preservation Month activities connect present with past in Benton and Linn Counties

Benton-Linn Preservation Month 2026

On May 5, the Board of Commissioners proclaimed May as Historic Preservation Month in Benton County. All community members are invited to dive into the past this May.

Executive director of the Benton County Historical Society, Jessica Hougen, read a proclamation at the May 5 Board meeting.

“The places that shape our history — from grand architectural landmarks to humble main streets and cultural landscapes — form the foundation of our shared heritage and collective identity,” read Hougen.

This year’s national theme is “Built to Endure.” It celebrates physical structures and the commitment to preserve them. Historic buildings and neighborhoods can help keep local history alive for generations to come.

The Benton County Historic Resources Commission, Benton County Historical Society and other partners will host walking tours and events in May to highlight local history.

The month will end with a community party, hosted by the Benton County Historical Society. It will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a free 1950s-themed bash on Saturday, May 30. The event will include live music, local food trucks and wine, a classic car show, costumes and more.

About Historic Preservation Month

The National Trust for Historic Preservation created the official observance in 1973. Local preservation groups, state historical societies, businesses and civic organizations across the country co-sponsor the event. The month’s activities promote historic places to help build national and community pride. They also encourage heritage tourism and show how historic preservation benefits communities.

The Benton County Historic Resources Commission coordinates with the State Historic Preservation Office and property owners to review sites for placement on the Benton County Register. Through the Register, these organizations also help preserve the character of historic buildings. The Benton County Board of Commissioners appoints seven community volunteers to the Commission on a rotating basis.
